Mari Katayama (b. 1987) is one of the most prominent Japanese photographers to gain international recognition since the 2010s. She has held solo exhibitions at institutions in Europe and the US, such as the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, and her work is part of the collections of museums such as the Tate Modern in London. In 2020, she participated in the Venice Biennale, published her highly acclaimed photo book Gift, and won the 45th Kimura Ihei Photography Award. Mari, who was born with a congenital disorder and had her legs amputated at the age of nine, often uses her own body as the subject of her diverse body of work, focusing on issues such as the meaning of beauty and challenging preconceived notions about the body.
