Onishi Shigeru | 大西茂
Shigeru Onishi (1928–1994) incorporated mathematical theory into his photographic and calligraphic work. He began taking photographs while studying topology at Hokkaido University and developed a unique style that combined multiple exposures and uneven brushing of the printing paper with developer solution. After being highly praised by contemporary critics such as Shuzo Takiguchi and Shigene Kanamaru, he participated in the First International Subjective Photography Exhibition in 1956. The following year, he began producing bokusho paintings and was soon recognized as an Art Informel artist by the French critic and curator Michel Tapié. With his work resonating with the Abstract Expressionist movement, Onishi exhibited in Italy and France, but continued to work in Japan with the avant-garde Gutai Art Association. In 1970, he published his mathematical work in Germany and continued to create art at the intersection of photography, calligraphy, and mathematics.
