Japanese photographer Yuki Onodera (b. 1962) has lived in Paris since 1993. She gained international recognition with her work Portrait of Second-Hand Clothes (1994), but is also known for her original approach to photography, such as her series How to Make a Pearl (2002), for which she inserted marbles into her camera while shooting, or Muybridge's Twist (2014–), which combines painting and collage. Through various experimental methods, Onodera continues to explore themes such as the materiality of the photographic medium or how the human body is manifested within the mechanical and scientific process of photography. Her work is included in the collections of major museums around the world, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. In 2006, Onodera was awarded the Niépce Prize, one of France's most prestigious photography awards.
