Kunié Sugiura (b. 1942) moved to the United States in 1963 to study photography with Kenneth Josephson at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After graduating, Sugiura moved to New York, where she pursued an experimental style of photography that resulted in series such as Cko, produced using fish-eye lenses and various darkroom techniques, and her unique photo-canvas process, in which she prints photographs directly onto canvas. In the 1980s, she produced photograms of cats, frogs, and other animals, as well as flowers such as lilies and irises. In the 1990s, her silhouettes evolved into the Artists / Scientists / Boxing Papers and Intimate series. In a career spanning more than half a century, Sugiura's experimental works have gained worldwide recognition and continue to inspire artists and audiences today.
